Lower speech usage, cognitive abilities, emotional issues, fatigue, and swallowing difficulty were found to be risk factors for lower communication participation in Parkinson's disease (PD). However, the researchers found that how a person perceives their speech impairment has the most impact on their communication participation. Also, this paper supports the idea that individuals who communicate more are more satisfied with their involvement in life activities. Therefore, the results suggest that individuals with PD are likely to benefit from early speech therapy intervention.
